In summer 2001 I travelled with another person by bicycle through europe. After a lot of countries and cities we reached the bicycle path between Germany and Poland at the river Neiße and Oder. On the way north we passed at first the saxony town Görlitz. A vague recollection were streets without people, decomposed houses and a church at the riverside. In the diary there was no nice entry about the region, the city and I notice in my mind: Görlitz is not worthwhile.
Presence: On 11th of july I drove with my motor home from Kraków/Poland to my home town Essen. On the way I noticed that I have trouble with my car. The wheel bearing made it that I must drove to an autoshop. Where? In Görlitz. My first idea was: Oh no. Not in this town. The town without people and dirty houses. I had to sleep one night in this town and so I visited the hotel Europa in the city. A nice hotel with a good breakfast and a friendly owner. The first positiv thing!
The second was the Old Town. I didn´t knew them and I was surprised how fine is the city of Görlitz. A great open air theater shows a good show about the middle-age and the houses are fine, nice and it makes fun to go through the narrow alleys. I found the church at the riverside, the signs of pilgrimway of Jacob, I crossed the border again, but now at feet and I decided to make a lot of photos at the next morning.
But first I went at the next morning to the shop of the german automobile associaton (ADAC). A friendly lady todl me about her visit in Essen a few days earlier. And she was so surprised about my nice home town Essen as I was surprised about Görlitz. So we talked about culture. In this thing it is funny, because Essen and Görlitz were the both last Cities they advertised for europes capital of culture in 2010 - and Essen had won.
I made my pictures, walked through the town and wait for my car. Suddenly, Pingu called: My friends! And really, there was an ice cream parlour called “Pinguin Eisbar” and in front of the house there were a lot penguins in plush. So, I took a photo of this with Pingu and we fetched our car.
At last I was a little bit sad that I must left this nice town but I am sure: I will come back!
Result: Without the break down of my car I wouldn´t know that Görlitz is so a nice town. Everyone is laughing and looks lucky and the town is not the same town that I come to know for five years. Now I come to know the town better.
Thank you, Görlitz, I felt very good!
